This guide compares the main PHP frameworks with their current major version, PHP requirement and support status (checked on each project’s official site at the time of writing), then gives you a simple decision guide.

Start with PHP itself: which versions are supported in 2026

Every framework depends on a supported PHP release. PHP gives each branch two years of active support followed by two years of security fixes only. At the time of writing, php.net’s supported versions page lists:

PHP branch

Released

Active support until

Security fixes until

8.2

8 Dec 2022

31 Dec 2024

31 Dec 2026

8.3

23 Nov 2023

31 Dec 2025

31 Dec 2027

8.4

21 Nov 2024

31 Dec 2026

31 Dec 2028

8.5

20 Nov 2025

31 Dec 2027

31 Dec 2029

Source: php.net, checked November 2026. PHP 8.1 and older no longer receive security fixes.

In practice, start new projects on PHP 8.4 or 8.5, and plan to move any application still on PHP 8.2 before the end of 2026. An application on PHP 7.x or 8.0/8.1 is running without security patches from the PHP project.

The top PHP frameworks for 2026 at a glance

Framework

Current major version

Minimum PHP

Best fit

Learning curve

Laravel

13 (released 17 Mar 2026)

8.3

SaaS, web apps, APIs, admin portals, AI features

Gentle to moderate

Symfony

8.1 stable; 7.4 LTS

8.4 (8.x); 8.2 (7.4 LTS)

Large, long-lived enterprise systems

Moderate to steep

CodeIgniter

4.7

8.2

Small apps, simple APIs, shared hosting

Gentle

Laminas / Mezzio

MVC security-only; Mezzio active

Varies by package

Existing Zend/Laminas estates; middleware apps

Steep

Yii

Yii3 (released 31 Dec 2025); Yii 2 maintained

8.2 (Yii3)

Data-heavy portals and CRUD back offices

Moderate

CakePHP

5 (5.4 current)

8.2

Convention-driven business apps

Gentle to moderate

Slim

4 (4.15)

7.4 (run it on a supported 8.x)

Microservices, small REST APIs

Gentle

Versions and requirements from each project’s official site or repository at the time of writing. Always confirm before you start a project.

1. Laravel

Laravel is the most widely used full-stack PHP framework and the default choice for most new web applications. Laravel 13 was released on 17 March 2026, requires PHP 8.3 or newer and supports PHP 8.3 to 8.5. Each major version gets 18 months of bug fixes and two years of security fixes, so Laravel 13 receives security fixes until 17 March 2028. Laravel 12 receives security fixes until 24 February 2027, which means teams on Laravel 12 or older should plan an upgrade during 2026–27.

Strengths: Eloquent ORM, Blade templates, Artisan CLI, queues, scheduling, testing tools and first-party packages for authentication, billing, search and real-time features. Laravel 13 adds a first-party AI SDK, JSON:API resources and vector search support.

Watch out for: a yearly major release cycle. Upgrades are usually small, but they need to happen.

Best for: SaaS products, customer portals, marketplaces, internal tools and APIs where speed of delivery matters.

A note on Lumen: Lumen, Laravel’s former micro-framework, is no longer recommended for new projects. Its official repository advises starting new projects with Laravel instead.

2. Symfony

Symfony is a mature framework and a set of reusable components that many other PHP projects (including Laravel and Drupal) build on. Its release calendar is predictable: a new minor version every six months and a long-term support (LTS) release every two years. At the time of writing, Symfony’s releases page lists 8.1 as the stable version (requires PHP 8.4), 8.2 due in November 2026, and 7.4 LTS (requires PHP 8.2) with bug fixes until November 2028 and security fixes until November 2029.

Strengths: long support windows on LTS releases, strict separation of concerns, dependency injection, Twig templates, Doctrine ORM and excellent tooling for large teams.

Watch out for: more configuration and a steeper learning curve than Laravel.

Best for: enterprise platforms, complex domain logic, systems expected to run for many years, and teams that prefer to stay on an LTS release.

3. CodeIgniter

CodeIgniter is a lightweight framework with very little setup and a small footprint. The current CodeIgniter 4.7 user guide requires PHP 8.2 or newer with the intl and mbstring extensions. Applications still on CodeIgniter 3 are worth reviewing: version 4 was a rewrite, so moving across is a migration rather than a simple upgrade.

Strengths: fast to learn, easy to deploy, good documentation, few conventions to fight.

Watch out for: a smaller ecosystem of packages than Laravel or Symfony.

Best for: small business applications, simple APIs and projects with a small team.

4. Laminas (formerly Zend Framework) and Mezzio

Laminas is the community-supported continuation of Zend Framework. Its status needs an honest note: according to the Laminas maintenance status list,
laminas-mvc
is in security-only mode, following a 2025 Technical Steering Committee decision to move the MVC packages to security-only. Mezzio, the project’s PSR-7/PSR-15 middleware framework, and many standalone components remain actively maintained.

Best for: maintaining existing Zend or Laminas systems, or middleware-based applications built on Mezzio.

Not ideal for: starting a new MVC application. If you run a large Laminas MVC system, plan whether to move it to Mezzio, Symfony or Laravel.

5. Yii

Yii is known for good performance and its Gii code generator, which speeds up building CRUD screens. The Yii release cycle page shows Yii3 released on 31 December 2025 and requiring PHP 8.2 or newer. Yii 2.0.50 and later supports PHP 7.3 to 8.4, moves to security fixes only on 23 November 2026 and reaches end of life on 23 November 2027.

Best for: data-heavy portals and back-office applications, and teams already experienced with Yii.

Watch out for: Yii3 is a new architecture, so moving a Yii 2 application to Yii3 is a significant piece of work. Yii 2 applications need a plan before late 2027.

6. CakePHP

CakePHP is one of the oldest PHP frameworks and favours “convention over configuration”: follow its naming rules and much of the wiring happens for you. The CakePHP 5 installation guide lists PHP 8.2 as the minimum, with PHP 8.5 supported, and 5.4 is the current release at the time of writing.

Best for: business applications with lots of forms and database records, built by teams that like strong conventions.

Watch out for: a smaller hiring pool than Laravel or Symfony.

7. Slim

Slim is a micro-framework: routing, middleware and a PSR-7 request/response layer, and little else. You add only the libraries you need. The Slim 4 documentation lists PHP 7.4 or newer as the minimum; run it on a supported PHP 8.x release. Slim 4.15 is the current line at the time of writing.

Best for: microservices, webhooks, small REST APIs and prototypes.

Watch out for: as an application grows, you end up assembling and maintaining your own framework from separate packages.

What about Phalcon?

Phalcon is famous for speed because version 5 is delivered as a compiled C extension rather than PHP code. At the time of writing, the Phalcon website lists Phalcon 5.23 (C extension, PHP 8.1 to 8.5) and Phalcon 6, a pure-PHP version installed with Composer, as a release candidate. Both are maintained in parallel by a sponsor-funded community. The extension model makes hosting harder (you need to install the extension on every server), and the community is much smaller, so Phalcon suits teams that already know it and have measured that raw framework speed is their bottleneck.

How to choose: a decision guide

If your situation is…

Start with

New SaaS, portal or marketplace that must launch quickly

Laravel

Large enterprise system expected to run for 5+ years, with strict architecture rules

Symfony (on an LTS release)

Small internal tool or simple API, small team, basic hosting

CodeIgniter or Slim

Microservice or webhook receiver

Slim (or Symfony components)

Team already productive in Yii or CakePHP

Stay, and keep on the current major version

Existing Zend or Laminas MVC application

Plan a move to Mezzio, Symfony or Laravel

Then test your shortlist against five questions:

Support window: will the version you choose still receive security fixes for the next two to three years?

Hiring and handover: can you find developers (or a partner) who know it well, today and in five years?

Ecosystem: are there maintained packages for authentication, payments, queues and the integrations you need?

Hosting: does your hosting support the PHP version and extensions the framework needs?

Upgrade cost: how often do major releases arrive, and how much work is each upgrade?

Already on an older framework version?

Many business applications still run on Laravel 8–10, CodeIgniter 3, Yii 2 or PHP 7.x. They often work, but they no longer receive security fixes, and each year the upgrade gets larger. A sensible approach is to audit the code and dependencies, upgrade PHP and the framework one major version at a time with automated tests in place, and fix deprecations along the way. Our engineering guides cover upgrades and code health in more depth.

Frequently asked questions

Which PHP framework is best in 2026?

For most new web applications, Laravel. For large, long-lived enterprise systems, Symfony on an LTS release. For small apps and APIs, CodeIgniter or Slim. The best choice depends on your project size, support needs and team.

Is Laravel better than Symfony?

Neither is better overall. Laravel is faster to build with and has a large first-party ecosystem. Symfony offers longer LTS support windows and more explicit architecture, which large teams often prefer.

Which PHP version should I use for a new project?

PHP 8.4 or 8.5, provided your framework supports it. At the time of writing PHP 8.4 receives security fixes until 31 December 2028 and PHP 8.5 until 31 December 2029.

Is Zend Framework still supported?

Zend Framework continues as the Laminas Project. The Laminas MVC packages are now security-only, while Mezzio and many components are actively maintained.

Should I still use Lumen for APIs?

No. Laravel no longer recommends Lumen for new projects. Use Laravel itself for APIs, or Slim if you want a minimal micro-framework.

Build or upgrade your PHP application at a fixed price

Vibidsoft builds and upgrades PHP applications as fixed-price, milestone-based projects, never by the hour. For a new build, a fixed-price assessment (from $1,500, credited to the build) confirms the framework, architecture and scope. For an ageing application, Modernize & Rescue (from $5,000) upgrades PHP and the framework with security patching, followed by a care plan if you want ongoing support.

<p
