We choose the framework to fit the project, and we also take over existing codebases. These are the frameworks we see most often:

Laravel

Our default for new builds: Eloquent, queues, Horizon, Sanctum/Passport, Livewire and Inertia. See our dedicated Laravel development page.

CodeIgniter 3 and 4

Feature work and support on CodeIgniter 3 applications, and step-by-step upgrades to CodeIgniter 4 or migration to Laravel.

CakePHP

Maintenance of CakePHP 2.x and 3.x applications and upgrades to CakePHP 5, including ORM and authentication changes.

Yii 1.1 and Yii 2

Support for long-running Yii applications, Yii 1.1 to Yii 2 migrations and moving Yii 2 projects onto PHP 8.x.

Zend Framework / Laminas

Zend Framework 1 and 2 applications kept secure, and migration to Laminas (the successor to Zend) or Laravel.

Kohana and Smarty

Kohana is no longer maintained, and older Smarty versions do not run on PHP 8. We stabilise these apps and plan a move to a supported stack.

Legacy PHP modernisation

Many business-critical systems still run on PHP 5.6 or 7.x and on frameworks that no longer receive security fixes. Rewriting everything at once is risky, so we modernise in stages:

  1. Audit: we review code, dependencies, PHP version, hosting and security issues, and give you a written risk report and an upgrade plan.
  2. Stabilise: we add automated tests around critical flows, fix urgent vulnerabilities and set up version control and CI if they are missing.
  3. Upgrade: we move to PHP 8.2/8.3 and a supported framework version module by module, so the application keeps running throughout.
  4. Improve: we refactor slow queries, add caching and queues, and containerise the app for easier hosting on AWS, Azure or your own servers.

Typical results are faster page loads, lower hosting costs, passing security scans and a codebase your team can work on again.

Frequently asked questions

How much does PHP development cost?
It depends on scope. Small fixes and features are usually billed hourly or from a support retainer, and new applications are quoted at a fixed price after a short discovery call. Dedicated PHP developers are billed monthly. Contact us with your requirements and we will send you a written estimate.
Can you take over an existing PHP project from another developer?
Yes. We start with a code and hosting audit, document what we find, fix urgent issues, and then continue development or support. We regularly take over CodeIgniter, CakePHP, Yii, Zend and custom PHP codebases.
Do you still support CodeIgniter, CakePHP, Yii, Zend and Kohana?
Yes. We maintain applications on these frameworks and help clients upgrade them, either to the current version of the same framework or to Laravel. Kohana and Zend Framework 1 are no longer maintained, so for those we recommend a planned migration.
Can you upgrade my application to PHP 8.3?
Yes. We check every dependency and deprecated function, add tests around critical features and upgrade in a staging environment first. Most applications move to PHP 8.2 or 8.3 without downtime.
Should I migrate my legacy PHP app to Laravel?
Often, but not always. If the application is actively developed, moving to Laravel makes hiring easier and adds a large ecosystem. If it only needs to stay secure, upgrading the existing framework can be cheaper. Our audit gives you both options with costs.
